Empowering Transgender Lives

About Us

Who Are We?

The Beaumont Society is the largest and longest-established transgender support group in the UK. Founded in 1966, it provides a support network for the trans community. The society aims to promote understanding and acceptance of transgender issues, offering support to individuals and their families and advocating for dignity and respect for trans people in all aspects of life.

The society is named after the Chevalier d’Eon de Beaumont, a French aristocrat who lived a double life as both a man and a woman. It is a non-profit organization funded by membership subscriptions and donations.

A support network for the trans-community

As well as being a support network, the society keenly promotes a better understanding of the conditions of transgender, transvestism and gender dysphoria in society, thereby creating and improving tolerance and acceptance of these conditions by a wider public.

Based in the United Kingdom, the Society is a democratically run, non-profit organisation funded entirely by membership subscriptions and donations. Our publications include a quarterly Magazine that is essential reading and represents a lifeline for those unable to attend one of the Society’s many social groups.

Our Aims

As a UK-registered charity, our primary focus is the transgender individual. In support of that focus, we aim to:

  1. Engage and support the accomplishment of any lawful activity that promotes the above aims.
  2. Form an association for the transgender community to facilitate mutual support and communication to improve the health, emotional well-being and confidence of transgender people.
  3. Promote and assist the study of gender.
  4. Educate lay and professional groups about Transgenderism, Gender Dysphoria and the work of the Society.

history of the beaumont society
Initially founded in 1966, the society started as a UK Chapter of the secret American organisation “Full Personality Expression” (FPE). From those early roots, the UK Chapter eventually became the Beaumont Society, taking the name of the Chevalier d’Eon de Beaumont. Initially, all members had to be sponsored by an existing member and vetted before being accepted – but this is no longer true.

Traditionally regarded as a secret MTF group for cross-dressers, the society has significantly evolved since these humble beginnings. It’s now open to any section of the transgender community who would like to join, MTF, FTM, bi or non-gendered – even wives and partners. If you are a wife or partner, we would also recommend our sister Friends, Familly & Partners organisation, which was established explicitly for you.
